FROM SURVIVAL TO SUSTAINABILITY
SHELTER CHILDREN'S HOME
Ngong, Kenya
An accountant by trade, Mary Wambui Muirvri, left her career 20 years ago to focus on rescuing and rehabilitating children in Ngong, Kenya. Since inception, care and support have been provided to over 250 children. Many of the children are orphans from the AIDS epidemic or Maasai girls that have been rescued from early marriages and FGM. As the Director of the Shelter Children's Home, Mary has taken this mission from a small urban house to a large rural center with dorms, a school and acreage.
In 2018, Mary was invited by the United Nations to speak at The Commission on the Status of Women. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. www.unwomen.org/en/csw
Even with donations, Shelter Children's Home struggled month-to-month to provide the basic needs for the children. In 2016, Mary began to identify and implement sustainability practices and initiatives. These initiates offer resources to feed the children and generate sources of revenue for the shelter, offering more self-sufficiency and relieving pressure of full dependence on donations.
Mary provides an overview of the sustainability initiatives and the positive impact these are having on the shelter and the children. Come hear Mary’s amazing story and her links to Westlake.
