Hazel Reid attended our weekly meeting on June 3 and was acknowledged as the recipient of the $4,000 RO Williams Scholarship. Hazel plans to attend Florida State University. The scholarship is named after RO Williams, a long-time beloved Rotarian member and a strong supporter of the Westlake Chapparal Band. RO passed away a few months ago, and the Westlake Rotary Foundation partnered with RO's family to present a scholarship to a deserving band member. Jeff Simpler, a Rotary member, wrote the criteria for students applying for the scholarship. He requested that applicants include the Four-Way Test in their essays, which Hazel did beautifully. Westlake Rotary Foundation board members, Diane Hern, Dana Rushing, and David Jessich chose the awardee after reviewing five applicants. RO would have been proud to see such a worthy student receive the scholarship in his name. RO is sorely missed.
